Dancing the jota on Learn Spanish Holidays

On our Learn Spanish Holidays you stay at our renovated farmhouse, in a quiet farming hamlet in the valley of Ara. We are Simon and Lucy, your hosts, and we look forward to welcoming you to our home. Here the informal atmosphere encourages you to relax, a prerequisite for good learning. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy some stunning walks. We live within the Pyrenees Geopark, a UNESCO site of geological importance. This is one of the most unspoilt corners of the Spanish Pyrenees.

This week is for intermediate level Spanish, that is to say you are able to have a basic conversation in Spanish, even if it is not grammatically correct. There are approximately 3 hours of lessons each day, spread over 5 days, with our Spanish tutor Roberto Serrano.
On our Learn Spanish Holidays you put your Spanish into practice in a variety of ways. You get an understanding of the history and culture of the area by talking to and interviewing the locals. You attend a wine tasting, buy in the local market, and enjoy guided walks in the beautiful Ordesa National Park with Spanish mountain guide Alberto. In advance of each excursion we will cover some of the basic vocabulary and phrases needed to make the most of the daily outings.

The small group size is limited to a maximum of 8 people, which means there is plenty of opportunity for one to one tuition.

Before you book on our Learn Spanish Holidays we will send you a questionnaire to establish your level.

Learn Spanish Holidays Itinerary

The itinerary below gives an idea of what we will be doing during a typical week on one of our Learn Spanish Holidays.
The format of each day will be decided by Simon, Lucy and Roberto, it will depend a great deal on the weather, eg. avoiding the midday heat. See our Pyrenees Weather Forecast for a better idea of what to expect and what to pack (we send a recommended kit list when you book).

The lessons are a mix of classroom and outside activities in real life situations. We encourage Spanish speaking at all meal times and throughout the day, our two daughters love to help out if you get stuck on the vocabulary!

DAY 1 Learn Spanish Holidays: Saturday

Meet your hosts, Simon and Lucy, and fellow students. After our evening meal we give a brief presentation in English on the area and the format for the week.

DAY 2 Learn Spanish Holidays: Sunday

• A leisurely breakfast is followed by our morning lessons in Albella with Roberto.
• After lunch we walk down to the river where there is the option for a refreshing swim.
• We then continue our walk to visit local villages where we meet our neighbours. They will give us an insight to life here in days gone by. We will explain the fascinating history of the valley as well as pointing out some of the geological wonders of the area.
• After supper, in the cool of the evening we stroll down to the beautiful chapel of our local saint, San Urbez.

DAY 3 Learn Spanish Holidays: Monday

• Morning excursion to the spectacular valley of Ordesa.
• We walk alongside the Rio Arazas, gently climbing to reach three beautiful waterfalls. Towering limestone cliffs are on both sides of us, incredible to think they used to be under the sea! In fact we can still see evidence of ancient sea corals along the path that have withstood the test of time, even when valley was carved out by a huge glacier 65 thousand years ago.
• We will find a shady spot here for our picnic lunch, before heading back to Albella.
• Afternoon and evening Spanish lessons with Roberto in Albella.

DAY 4 Learn Spanish Holidays: Tuesday

• Today our Spanish class is in the medieval town of Ainsa. We will visit the old fort, where there are open views to Monte Perdido, and the impressive arched plaza. Tuesday is market day, so we have the perfect opportunity to try out our Spanish at the local stalls, and treat ourselves to a pastry and coffee at the “pasteleria”.Before we head back to our classroom in the old town.
• Lunch in a local restaurant, where we can sample the typical local dishes. A relaxing afternoon in Ainsa with the option of a gentle stroll to a viewpoint or simply exploring the Casco Antiguo with its little shops, cobbled streets, museums and 12th church (there is a great view from the top of the tower).
We reconvene for a local wine tasting in one of Ainsa's original bodegas. We will be encouraged to participate and describe the flavours and aromas of the various wines, putting into practice vocabulary we have learned in class.
• Return to Albella for a light supper.

DAY 5 Learn Spanish Holidays: Wednesday

• Morning Spanish classes in Albella.
• After lunch we will go to the Añisclo Canyon for a walk along the Rio Bellos. This is one of the most dramatic canyons in the national park. It is hard to imagine that the river once carved out the cliffs that now tower 1000m above us. We will keep a watchful eye for vultures, including the rare Lammergeier (Bearded vulture), circling over head as we walk past cascades and waterfalls. Within the canyon we visit an earlier home of our village saint, San Urbez, built into the cliffs of the canyon, and now a chapel.
• Return to Albella for dinner.

DAY 6 Learn Spanish Holidays: Thursday

• Roberto will take this final class in his own village in the valley of Chistau. This is the most traditional Aragonese valley, due to its remote position. You will be interviewing the locals, including a first hand explanation in the village museum, a fascinating archive of harsh mountain life, and visiting the information centres to learn about the natural park with its 3000m high peaks.
• Lunch is at a top restaurant renowned for its excellent cuisine made with produce from the valley.

DAY 7 Learn Spanish Holidays: Friday

• After Breakfast we go to the west side of the Ordesa National Park. We start by driving through the Valle de Bujaruelo before arriving at the medieval bridge of San Nicolás de Bujaruelo. From here we do an out and back walk along the river Ara. As we walk through marshy meadows and past mountain streams, we should see a variety of flowers and will be on the look out for marmots. Once back at the bridge we will have our picnic lunch on the grassy riverbank.
• Later in the afternoon we take a guided 4x4 excursion above the canyon of Ordesa. We will go to five breathtaking view points, each giving a different panoramic view. Our guide and driver will explain about the flowers, the animals and the history of the valley.

DAY 8 Learn Spanish Holidays: Saturday

• Breakfast.
• A flexible timetable depending on departure times. A light lunch or a picnic is available.

Please note this is strictly a non-smoking holiday.
