Winter Walking Holiday Spanish Pyrenees

No Single Supplement. Excludes Flights.

THE PERFECT COMBINATION: 3 DAYS OF SNOW SHOE WALKING - 3 DAYS OF GUIDED WALKING

Introduction

Our Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees is the perfect tonic if you are looking to escape the grey days of winter. We are based in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees, a perfect location to combine snowshoe walking with walking trips in and around the Natural Park of Sierra de Guara.

Snow shoe walking is a fantastic way to escape the crowds and noise of a normal ski resort. It is a way to discover the real Pyrenees, in all their wild splendour.

Our Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees is a 6 day program of guided walks. We divide the week in two.
There are 3 days of snowshoe walking and 3 days of guided walking in and around the Sierra de Guara. In line with our Responsible Travel Policy we only use local qualified mountain guides. This combination gives us much more flexibility with the weather, enabling us to make the right activity choice on the day.
We are Simon and Lucy, your hosts for the week, and you will be staying at our beautiful renovated farmhouse. One of us will also accompany the group on our daily excursions. The group size is small, places are limited to 8 people.

The daily excursions are about enjoying this spectacular place where we live, there will be plenty of stops, time to take photos, look at nature or just marvel at the scenery that surrounds us.

"This part of the Pyrenees is outstanding for walking; it's stunningly beautiful."

Martina. Wivenhoe. Essex. 2016.

Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees Itinerary

The itinerary below gives an idea of what we will be doing during a typical week on one of our Winter Walking Holidays Pyrenees. The decision of exactly where we go on a particular day will be decided by Simon, Lucy, and the guides. It will depend a great deal on the weather and the snow conditions. See our Pyrenees Weather Forecast for a better idea of what to expect and what to pack (we send a recommended kit list when you book).

We offer 6 days of walking, however, at anytime you are able to take a rest day, and relax in the comfort of the farmhouse. We always offer a mix of walks and take great care to make sure everyone gets the most out of their holiday. A strenuous day is normally followed with an easier day and we make regular stops during a walk to look at the geological, historical and cultural points of interest, as well as the amazing wildlife.

DAY 1 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Saturday

Arrival at Casa Allué, Albella. A welcome drink and a chance to meet Simon and Lucy, your hosts for the week, before our evening meal.

DAY 2 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Sunday

We organise the snow shoes in advance so there are no delays hanging about ski shops! With kit in hand we start with a gentle introduction to the area, our destination, the valley of Pineta. For those who have not used snowshoes this is a great place to start, there will be time for instructions before we begin. This is a classic route with spectacular views of the north side of Monte Perdido. Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
Ascent: 370m. Distance: 10km. Time: 4 hours.

DAY 3 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Monday

This is our first trip to the natural park of the Sierra Guara. The walk will take us along quiet paths through the canyons of the natural park, culminating in a view of the spectacular Moorish citadel of Alquezar.
It is a beautiful walk combining ancient history and nature. We will see prehistoric cave paintings from the first inhabitants of the Pyrenees. Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
As well as amazing Mediterranean mountain landscapes we may also see vultures and other raptors.
Ascent: 300m Distance: 8km Time: 4-5 hour

DAY 4 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Tuesday

Today we go to Portalet where we are practically guaranteed snow for the whole of the winter. El Portalet, Col du Pourtalet or Portalet d'Aneu is a mountain pass, and the border crossing between France and Spain. The pass reaches a height of 1,794 m which is why we always have snow, in fact on the french side the pass is often closed from late October to late May. Ideal for snowshoe walking, we will enjoy panoramic views to France and Spain. Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
Ascent: 460 metres. Distance:6km. Time: 3-4 hours

DAY 5 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Wednesday

This easy route on well marked paths takes us to the spectacular castle and church above Samitier. Built in the 11th century on a rocky outcrop 100's of metres above the gorge of Entremón. The perfect place for a defence tower, not only for its 360° views but also due to the surrounding steep cliffs (a visit to the defence tower is optional and not recommended for people suffering from vertigo). For us it is an opportunity to appreciate the Pyrenees in all their glory. Below us, and stretching into the distance, is the ice blue Mediano lake.
We will walk along an amazing footpath cut into the rock. It is also an ideal place to spot Golden Eagle and Lammergeier (bearded vulture). Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
Ascent: 250m Distance: 18km Time: 4-5 hour

DAY 6 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Thursday

Today is the climax of our snowshoe walking and a truly spectacular walk.  We will be going to Tozal Blanco de Espierba. This provides amazing valley and mountain views. The route is varied as we walk in forests and along ridges, we climb to a height of 2000m. Here we see the dramatic cliff faces of the Three Marías.
Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
Ascent: 600m. Distance: 8km. Time: 5 hours.

DAY 7 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Friday

Today we make the ascent to Santa Marina. Here we will enjoy a magnificent 360° viewpoint, including the massif of Monte Perdido, the highest limestone mountain in Europe. From here we will truly appreciate the amazing geology of the area, and begin to understand how the Pyrenees where formed. In fact, as we climb, we will be walking on ancient sea fossils from over 50 million years ago, a time when the Pyrenees was under the sea. Picnic lunch. Evening meal in Albella.
Ascent: 820m with a difficulty level of Medium. Walking poles recommended.
Distance: 7km Time:4 hours

DAY 8 Winter Walking Holiday Pyrenees: Saturday

A flexible timetable depending on departure times. A light lunch or a picnic is available.

Please note this is strictly a non-smoking holiday.

“The local area is truly stunning and unspoiled, and was a lovely surprise as I had never visited this area before.”
