Barcelona and Madrid are hubs for international flights from outside Europe. If you are arriving from the USA, Canada, Australia or another international destination, then these are the best options.

There are also flights from many UK airports to Barcelona and Madrid. All the low-cost airlines fly to these cities.

From Barcelona and Madrid airports you will need to take the high speed train to Zaragoza (see below).

If you are looking for cheap flights, try Skyscanner or the airline directly.

The easiest way is to get the high speed AVE train to Zaragoza Delicias station. This leaves from Barcelona Sants station (Estació de Sants), in the heart of Barcelona, journey time approx. 1½ hours.

Planning and booking is straightforward with these links:
Trainline to book tickets on the renfe AVE high speed train or IRYO train.
Ouigo for a slightly cheaper ticket on a double decker OUIGO train.
Seat61 or Rail Europe to find out more about the train options and planning a train journey from farther afield.

Tips. The main stations are:
Barcelona Sants station to Zaragoza Delicias.
You will need to get a separate connection from the airport (see the section below).

There are two ways to get to Sants station:

1. Catch the RENFE train from Barcelona Airport and get off at Estación de Sants, journey time around 20 minute.

Trains run every half hour. A single journey is €4.20. Tickets can be purchased from the airport ticket counter or from one of the RENFE ticket machines, located around the arrival’s hall and at the airport’s train station.

If you buy an AVE or iryo ticket for the leg to Zaragoza this entitles you to FREE travel between the airport and estación de Sants. Important: follow the instructions on this link to validate your ticket – Same ticket onward travel

The platforms for the RENFE trains are located in the Terminal2B sector of the airport, across the street from the main airport building. It can be reached via the same set of escalators that also lead to departures in T2. Follow the signs for RENFE, along a covered bridge across the main road outside the airport. The train station is at the bottom of the stairs on the other side. Alternatively cross the wide road and follow the signs.

If you are arriving into Terminal 1, a shuttle bus will take you from outside of the terminal to the train station entrance.

2. Alternatively hire a Barcelona airport taxi. All legally operating taxis from the ranks of El Prat airport are black and yellow and have taxi roof signs. In addition, all drivers are obliged to have their licences on display. Fares to Sants Train Station are usually fixed at €30 from Terminal 1 and €35 from terminal 2. The price is further affected by factors such as: +€3.10 after 8:00pm and on bank holidays and +€3.40 for special larger vehicles. With light traffic the journey takes around 15 minutes.

If you are travelling via Barcelona it is well worth considering a city break.

Tip
One guest (Lynne) told us the following:
“Others had said that they didn’t want to travel by train because of the need to cross Paris toget to the Eurostar, but it was a very straightforward 2 stop journey on the RER, like the metro but a separate system. I found this website really helpful: https://showmethejourney.com/travel-info-and-tips/gare-de-lyon-to-gare-du-nord-by-rer/
I was able to buy a ticket at the bar on the TGV. I think if you’ve travelled on the London tube then getting between stations shouldn’t be too problemmatic”.

A number of our guests take a few days in Girona, and having been ourselves we can understand why.

Smaller than Barcelona it is quite compact. After 2 days we really knew the layout and there is plenty to keep you occupied.

Things to do in Girona

In the first two weeks of May the city is festooned in flowers as they celebrate ‘temps de flors’. But take note everywhere gets booked up, often a year in advance!

Break up your journey

Why not add on a couple of nights to include a city break in Barcelona, Madrid or Zaragoza.

Barcelona and Madrid speak for themselves, but Zaragoza is also worth a visit. The city is famous for its landmarks such as the Basílica del Pilar, La Seo Cathedral and the Aljafería Palace as well as the Goya Museum. There is also a very good tapas area, el Tubo, in the old part of the city. Use this link to take a look at the Spanish Tourist Board ‘Zaragoza in Two Days.’

We can also recommend places to stay in Zaragoza based on reviews from our guests.
